Give yourself a moment to settle
You do not need to feel perfectly calm. You will usually understand a pattern more clearly when you are not rushing or already overwhelmed. If you can, make a cup of tea, get comfortable, notice the room around you and take a few slow breaths.
There are no right answers. You are noticing what happens, not judging yourself for it.

Words you may hear
We use everyday language first. These are some of the proper terms you may come across when learning about repeated patterns.
Trigger: something that happens before a strong feeling, urge or response.
Coping pattern: a repeated response that helps you manage discomfort, stress or emotion in some way.
Avoidance: moving away from a feeling, task, conversation or situation that feels difficult.
Protective response: something your mind or body does in an attempt to reduce threat, discomfort or vulnerability.
Core belief: a deeply held idea about yourself, other people or the world that can influence how you respond.
Emotional regulation: noticing, managing and recovering from emotional responses.
Reinforcement: when the relief or reward after a behaviour makes that behaviour more likely to happen again.
